Seed Library Program

Seed Library Program

Project Background

Traditionally, the native Kinnaura people relied on millets, cereals like buckwheat, and a wide variety of leafy vegetables, both wild and cultivated, as staples throughout the year. However, over time, the availability of hybrid seeds in the market has led to the decline of traditional seed varieties, threatening this rich agricultural heritage. To address this, we encourage farmers to adopt diverse farming practices by reintroducing native crops on their farms. To support this effort, we have initiated a seed library program, where farmers can procure native seeds, which will be made available free of cost starting March 2025. The only condition is that they donate a small portion of the seeds—just a few grams—back to the library after their first successful harvest, ensuring the seeds remain accessible to all in the future. We also welcome contributions of native seeds not yet in our collection to expand the diversity of our seed bank. Donors will be acknowledged for their valuable role in preserving this agricultural heritage. In the future, we aim to include seeds from plants found in the ghasnis, many of which were once staples in the Kinnaura tribe's diet. By reviving these traditional crops, we hope to encourage sustainable farming, conserve biodiversity, and preserve the cultural and ecological legacy of the region.
